Friday

Wow there are only a few more days left at school and this means an end to Room 6, as many of us go to new classes next year, or even in Connor's case a new school. (BOO HOO BOO HOO)
Yesterday Bailey G got 3rd in Long Jump and Jenna-Rae got 1st in Shot Put and Baseball throw at the Interschool Athletic Championships....we are VERY proud of you.
Next week we go to the Maori Park swimming pool on Tuesday. We go on buses and have lunch at the bay playground first.
On Wednesday there is going to be a Hangi at school.
Its a very busy week.
Please have a look for any school books and sports uniforms. They need to be RETURNED.

Hello

Meet Franky our new class pet. We can feed him but don't want to feed him too much because he might get VERY sick.
It was great to see that 10 people voted on our poll about having a walking school bus. 9 of these thought we should have one here at Highfield school. We will see if we get any replies to our questions and then take our "thinking" to the school council.
Yesterday we had cricket coaching. We learnt how to bounce the ball onto the bat and how to hit the ball hard. We got given a bag that had a poster, cricket cards, a certificate and a game in it. We can go to cricket sessions starting next Saturday in the mornings - see our school newsletter for more details.

Celebrations

We are now doing some individual inquiries into different celebrations...Maddy has done a poster on Christmas and James has done a powerpoint on Halloween. Makayla has a speech on the Chinese New Year. Tomorrow we will start sharing them with the class.

We have had a few birthdays this week...Kaden's was on Saturday (so was Mrs Cooper's), yesterday was Hazel's and today it is Connor and Isaya. Just as well we had our party last week.

Congratulations to Joshua, Bailey G, Kaden, Nick, Jenna-Rae who will be representing Highfield School at the interschool Athletic Sports soon....they will have to keep training!

Class Birthday Party

On Wednesday we had a class birthday party. We had different things from other countries like a cake with a coin in, red lanterns, and fruit shaped lollies. We played games like pass the parcel, pin they eye on the donkey and musical chairs. After that we got to eat and even got given a birthday present. We made cards for each other and tried to say Happy Birthday from the country we had studied.

Athletic Sports

On Tuesday we went to the all weather track for our school sports. We had to be at school early and we walked up there. We had different events - long jump, high jump, shot put, baseball throw and 200m in the morning and then in the afternoon we had sprints and relays and then a house walk. Even Mrs Cooper did it for Green house.

Some of our class did very well and got places but EVERYBODY tried to be the best they could.

Birthdays

We have been learning about birthday celebrations in New Zealand and in different countries. Today we did a venn diagram to compare them. We are starting to plan a class birthday party that will have some of the traditions that are used in other countries around the world. This birthday party will be on WEDNESDAY 4 NOVEMBER. We can't wait, but we have to organise lots of things before then.

Next Friday we are having different things to raise money for Samoa. We are having a mufti day, a sausage sizzle and a mini fair. We can bring along our old toys and books to sell at it.

Next Tuesday is the school cross country....we hope it is going to be FINE - keep your fingers crossed.

Monday

At the weekend the Home and School had a Fashion in Motion evening. Some people made some outfits to model and McCabe's mum was one of them. She got a 2nd and 3rd place for the clothes that she made. Room 6 says CONGRATULATIONS - you must be a very good sewer!
She won lots of money and got 2 certificates. McCabe is very proud of his mother this week.
Some other people went to a Shakespere afternoon at Boys High and some went to the Roncalli School Fair.

TERM 4

Our new Kiwi Can focus this term is RESPECT. We had to go on a treasure hunt to find the missing letters.
Our topic this term is celebrations and we are starting to look at something we all have - BIRTHDAYS! We will be looking at how we celebrate birthdays and also how people in different countries celebrate birthdays.
On Tuesday 27 October we have our school cross country and the next week we have the Athletic sports so we have started to train for them.

Thursday 17 September

Next Wednesday afternoon we are having a special assembly to share our learning from this term with our parents. We hope they all will come. Our class is going to share all about Water because we have learnt SO much and been busy on the computers making powerpoints and posters.

Wai Water Trip

On Thursday we went on a bus to 3 different places. First we went to the water reservoir. We went on top the of the building and saw the ozone pipes. We went in a tunnel and the lights turned off. We went up the hill and looked at the big reservoirs that hold the water for Timaru. We saw the fresh water coming in from Pareora River.

Next we went to the Museum. Nadine told us all about the water molecules- 2 Hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. We also found out what things can make river water bad. We got to see the whitebait and she fed them.

Last we went to the milliscreen place that deals with all Timaru's wastewater. It was disguisting and stinky in places. Some brave people went down to the see the wet wall, but Mrs Cooper didn't.

Tekapo - Ice Skating

Last Tuesday we went to Tekapo to the Winter Park. We went skating and swimming. There were frames that helped us learn how to skate. One hot pool was real hot but that was adults only. We weren't allowed to dunk under. People went under the fountains.

It was a GREAT DAY.

Video

At Kiwi Can Sally read us a story which some people helped to act it out.

The moral of the story was DON'T TELL LIES

Kiwi Can

Today we went to Kiwi Can and talked more about being ACCOUNTABLE.

We have 4 groups and Sally and Vaughan give us points.

We did an energerizer that was butt shuffle. The person in the middle had to try and get the empty mat. We didn't want to be the person in the middle.

Monday, August 31, 2009

Last day of August

We can't wait until Wednesday when we have the disco. Ours will be at lunchtime but we get to wear mufti all day.
Today in Kiwi Can we talked about being accountable. Make sure we are doing this at home too. We had a puppet show that helped us to understand what being accountable means. Today's tiki people were Amelia and Nick.
Next week we have a skate trip to Tekapo. Thats going to be lots of fun. We go up in buses and we go next Tuesday.

Eggcellent Egg sitters

Well only 5 eggs made it through the week. These 5 are eggspert egg sitters.

Friday, August 21, 2009

Mrs Willox

It was Mrs Willox's last day with us today. We have enjoyed having her in our classroom and wish her all the best. Maybe one day she will be back teaching at Highfield.
We have had some eggs that have cracked or been scrambled. Watch out next week for the winning eggsitters. We will put a photo of them on to here.

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

KOS

Mrs Hocking and Mrs Cooper have been teaching us about keeping ourselves safe. We have been practicing statements like "Stop.......I don't like it!" Today we got to using the telephone to ring 111 and also created our "egg people". We have to egg sit them for a week. It means we have to look after them very carefully so none of them become scrambled.

Monday, August 10, 2009

Monday 10 August

Today we went to Kiwi Can again. We used our groups to role play honesty situations. It was a shame that we didn't have a video to share them with you. .....WE WERE GREAT, Stars in the making!

Thursday, August 6, 2009

Thursday

We don't have to come to school tomorrow as it is a Teacher Only Day.
Madison broke her arm at school yesterday. She has her arm in a cast, just like Bailey G's used to be as he got his cast off last Friday.

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Wednesday

Today we started looking at writing instructions. It is very tricky for us because we have to make sure we put the method steps into the right order.

We go to the hall for gym fun. Yesterday we got to walk along the high beam and jump off.

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Mufti Day

We had a mufti day today. The school council will use the money to run the disco later this term.

Mrs Willox is teaching us all about water. Today we did an experiment that showed us how water turns from a gas to a liquid. First we also made some puddles to see what happened to that water. This was following on from yesterday when we looked at changing liquid water into a gas state
.
We are becoming experts - just ask us.

QUESTION TIME

Where have all our comments gone???

MONDAY

Today we went to Kiwi Can. Vaughan is a new Kiwi Can teacher. Today we played skittles. Vaughan and Sally had to catch us with a BIG ball. McCabe was the last one standing - well done McCabe. We are learning about intergrity. This means being honest and reliable.

This afternoon we went to the ICT room and learnt how to make powerpoints. We worked in groups and it was important to co-operate with each other.

On Friday we are having a visit from the Kahurangi Dance Group. It will be good as they have visited us before and been very impressive.

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

Windy Wednesday

Today we went to the hall and did JUMP JAM. It was fun. Rooms 8 and 11 came along too.

This afternoon we use charcoal to draw trees out in the playground. Before we got to use the charcoal we drew pictures of a bike using special drawing pencils. This is called sketching and we had to use yo yo eyes.

For Maths we are looking at weight and today we estimated how heavy some grocery items were. We used sand to try and make the same weight again. Another activity was working out how heavy some parcels were.

Term 3 - we are back AGAIN

We had fun at Kiwi Can today. We had to work out a code to find out what the topic is for the term We worked in groups to solve it. It was Shaynes last day at Kiwi Can. Next week we get to meet Vaughn who is the new Kiwi Can teacher. We also played a game called rob the tube. It was fun. Bailey L and Jessie got to have the class tiki's for super work.
Today Mrs Willox came. She is in Room 6 for the next 5 weeks. It will be GREAT FANTASTIC and AWESOME!
We made a graph to show things we did in the holidays. Come and have a look. Mrs Cooper thinks people did some fun things in the holidays. Tomorrow we will take our sample folders home. We hope that Mum and Dad will love looking at them.
Bailey L turned 8 today...happy birthday Bailey!

Friday - End of another term

Busy Busy Morning!!!
John Key came and opened our new hall. He was very nice and told us a funny story. We have to be nice to everybody at school...we might met up with them later in life or even marry one of them. Bailey G got his autograph on the cast on his broken arm. Lots of parents came and watched too.
Many of us went home after getting an ice block at lunchtime.

HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY......Be back in 2 weeks!

Bailey G wasn't at school today. He was at home as yesterday he broke his arm. We hope it doesn't hurt too much Bailey.

This afternoon we got to have our Paper Plane contest. Macy from Room 11 won it. Her plane went a huge 8m 32cm. Bailey L's got close - it went just over 7m. Maddy threw her's 7m too.

Wednesday

Today we had another practice for the powhiri. We are going to have it in the hall because the weather forecast is for RAIN and we don't want to get wet. It is important that we all look nice and tidy on Friday....we need to be in our best school uniform.
In maths we have been learning about the metric system and weighing things. Today we made art folders for our art, so we can take it home on Friday. Today our shared reading book was called Perfect Paper Planes. We made our own planes and tomorrow we get to fly them. Lets hope our planes go further than Room 8 and Room 11's.
Our art is all up in the hall. You are welcome to come and see it tomorrow or Friday.
Mrs Willox came to visit us again today. She will be spending 5 weeks with us next term. It will be lots of fun. We hope we were not too naughty today and scared her off.

Monday, June 29, 2009

Last week of Term

It is going to be a very busy week. We have to get a lot of our work finished to go into our sample folders - especially some children who have been away.
On Friday we had a practice for the the hall opening. We may have to have another one during the week - just to make sure our singing is REALLY good for Mr Key. We are singing Tutira Mai. The hall opening is on Friday. Lets hope it is a lot warmer and drier than today.
Mrs Cooper is going to start putting some of our art work up in the hall. Every classroom will have some of their art on display. It is going to make the hall look GREAT FABULOUS AWESOME and BEAUTIFUL! Make sure you come along to see it.
On Thursday we are going to have a Paper Plane contest with Room 8 and 11. We may have to practice making planes at home.

Monday, June 22, 2009

Monday

Last week we got to use the hall for the first time. We had a look through on Thursday and then on Friday we had our assembly in there.

Today we went to Kiwi Can. Shayne and Sally are the leaders. We get to go every Monday now. Shayne told us about the time he jumped onto a leopard ray and had a ride on it. Sally likes playing on the playstation - just like some of us!

Wednesday 17th

YAH - tomorrow is going to be an exciting day. We go to the Art Gallery in the morning and hopefully the hall is finished so we can get to walk through it to see all the new things in it.
We found Harold yesterday afternoon. He was the train driver all the time. Ask us at home what we learnt when we were at the Life Education Caravan - IT WAS LOTS!!!

Another Video

More Art

Monday 15 June

Today we managed to get our first art movie to load on this blog site. We hope you enjoy our art. Mrs Cooper will help us get some more done this week so we can show you more work.
We went to see Harold last Friday but he was on a trip - trapped in a body somewhere. We go again tomorrow so hopefully we get to find him. He will tell us a joke at the end. On Friday we took an xray of Josh there. He turned all red under the light.
The hall is getting closer to being finished but now they have started some work on the drive way so we have to be careful there too.
Today we talked about what a Powhiri is and we are starting to learn a new song for it.

Art Movie

WE FORGOT

HAVE A GREAT LONG WEEKEND.....NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY

Friday

After lots of training for our cross country we found out today that it has been postponed until later in the year. It is just toooooooooooo wet to have it next week. Never mind, we are VERY FIT now.
Bryn - we hope you put LOTS of snow on your painting of Mount Cook - there has been lots. The mountains are opening for skiing too.
Next week we go to Room 8 to learn all about Maori Art. Mrs Wilson has been reading us some Maori Myths so we already know a little about Maori Art and the designs they use.
It is important if we are not coming to school we get our parents to ring the office and let them know.

Thursday, May 21, 2009

Thursday

Tomorrow is sausage sizzle day again. We can buy a sausage for lunch every Friday this term. Our orders need to be in on a Thursday morning but if we forget we can order them on Friday morning.
We wonder if Bryn knows all about Pacific Island Art - perhaps we will have to write to him and ask him all about it.

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Tuesday 19th May

Today we went to Room 11 in the afternoon. We looked at Pacific Island Art. We looked at Niue art and found out that some of their art looks very similar to Samoan art. They both have flower patterns.

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Art Work

Yesterday we looked at another New Zealand artist called Marilynn Webb. We will be recreating some paintings on Friday - keep watching this space.
Did you guess what COW stood for. It is Computers on Wheels. We have it booked again for tomorrow morning YAY!
This week we are making x-ray pictures of Australian animals. We have found out that the symbols inside them represent their spine, heart, lungs and other organs. Today we have done the outline and will finish them tomorrow.
Mrs Cooper is trying to get two movies put onto the school web site. These movies show our pictures so Mum's and Dad's and Grandparents will get to see what fantastic artists we are....
WORLD FAMOUS IN ROOM 6!!!!!!

Cow Day

This morning we had all the apple laptops in our room and they came across in the COW - ask us at home what it stands for....can you guess?

We finished our versions of Graham Sydney's landscapes. They are up on the wall - come and have a look as they are great.
This afternoon we started our aborigine art and tomorrow will start doing the dots.

Monday, May 4, 2009

Monday - its May already!!!

Today we did a bit more on our Graham Sydney paintings. They are looking great - maybe we will be famous like him one day.
Tomorrow we are starting to look at Aborginal Art and the symbols they use. Perhaps you can help me look at home to find some information about it.
This morning we went for our first practice run for the cross country - it was hard but we will get much better and faster the more we practice. The cross country is on the 2nd June - only 4 weeks to get fit!!!
The hall is looking great - they are now working on the inside of it so it won't be long until we can get to use it.
Remember to look inside our homework books - we have spelling and some notices today.

Last Day of Term One

Today we have done lots of cleaning up in our room. We are taking home our pencil cases to check them over. Lots of us need new pencils, glue sticks and rubbers.
For lunch today many of us had sausages and juicies. It was great. Thank you Basketball players for organising it.
We just want to wish everybody a happy holiday. Remember we don't start back until TUESDAY the 28th. Monday is a teacher only day.

Movie time

Wednesday 8 April

It has been a long time since we wrote here - we have been VERY busy and Mrs Cooper has been away.

We have finished today our Leave art work. We made a collage of leaf rubbings, drew some pencil drawings of leaves and dyed 2 of them lots of colours. Come in and have a look at them hanging in our classroom.

The hall is looking great. The builders have been very busy and some of the walls have brick and wood on them.

We really enjoyed our wacky face day.....don't we look great! Thanks for the fly cemetries - they tasted really nice. We decided we may have our own wild food festival next term. Mum's and Dad's put your thinking caps on about what we might have!!!

Scenic

We had a fantastic morning down at the scenic exploring Autumn - running through leaves, throwing them, watching them fall and glide to the ground. WOW we learnt HEAPS! We will have so much to tell you about this morning. This afternoon we have captured some of our thoughts into poems and pictures.

April Fools Day

Not too many tricks were played in Room 6 this morning. Mrs Cooper thinks it was good she wasn't at school before lunchtime. She went to the interschool swimming sports.

The hall is looking different and it is starting to look a lot better now. The builders are really busy and have put some walls up.

We are really excited because tomorrow we are going for a walk to the scenic to explore autumn.

Autumn

On Thursday morning we are going for a walk to the Scenic to find out all about Autumn. We hope it is going to be a nice day for it. We did a Y chart about autumn and came up with some fantastic words. At home we will be thinking about some more.

Creepy Caterpillars

Our caterpillars have been walking all over the bookcase at the weekend. Two chrysalis are now hanging on the top shelf and one caterpillar has just made a white thread to hang from beside the swan plants. Unfortuately one chrysalis fell off during the weekend and it died.
The hall had some more roof iron put onto it. No walls are finished yet so we can still see right through it. We still have our assemblies in the library.
We have just started talking about Autumn and today we started a KWL chart. That's what we know and what we want to know. We can't do the L part until we learn something.
No Mrs Cooper doesn't know what a fly cemetry is - Perhaps you better make some for the class. Are you really sure that insects are gluten free?

FRIDAY

Today we saw a caterpillar change into a chrysalis. We watched it as it wiggled and squirmed around lots.
We think the hall is looking terrific. We should say a big thank you to the workmen for making the hall bigger and working so hard.
At assembly Connor and Hannah got certificates. Next week we are having special certificates for good behaviour - playing nicely with others because some of us haven't been doing that very well. We need to think before we act.
Remember next Friday is Wacky Face day.

Thursday

Our blog group were very busy this morning so didn't get there blog finished so we are writing a combined one again today. We finished off our butterflies and they look beautiful on the wall. Our wee notebook tells us that a butterfly is an insect - ask us tonight what an insect is. It has been a hot day - we wish the juicies were on sale today and not just on Friday's.

Mrs Wilson

Today Mrs Wilson is taking our class. This afternoon we got to do lots of fun things about butterflies. We used paint and made a symmetrical butterfly - ask us what we did. There were also word finds, booklets and a monarch kite
to make.

Tuesday 24

Today we got some new swan plants because the caterpillars have eaten all the other swan plant leaves and we still have heaps of caterpillars.
We drew pictures of things around Highfield School and then we painted them. The other day we made nice frames for them and now they are up on the wall.
Today we put Nick's butterfly on the swan plants. Some people thought it was real but it was actually fake.
This morning a big truck came in the driveway and brought long iron for the roof of the hall. It won't be long until it is finished.

Monday

Today we saw a chrysalis on a book. We knew the caterpillars would go to funny places. Today we found two new boy butterflies on the swan plants. We let them go outside after they flew around the classroom. Some people got to see another hatch just before Maths - they saw the whole process. It was AMAZING to watch. Its a butterfly extravaganza day. The caterpillars we have left have eaten nearly all the swan plant - Mrs Cooper might have to buy some pumpkin today.
Some people got to go on the apple laptops again and others wrote emails home. We have a ICT roster to take turns at things.

The men are busy working on the hall still - today they cut holes in the wall. It was NOISEY.
Congratulations to the Year 4 Top School Team. They won a new ball when they got 2nd place yesterday. Joshua told us it was great fun, especially the water slide.

Another Friday

Its been a very muddled day - we didn't even get time for our spelling test. This will have to be caught up first thing on Monday - 2 more days to practice.
Good luck to the children who are taking part in Top School on Sunday - we hope it is a fine day for you.
Next week we start a new system for our blog - different children will get a turn each day to fill you in on our classroom happenings - we even have special photographers.
Today at assembly, some council members told us about a special day they are having on Friday 3 April. It is going to be WACKY FACE DAY. We have to bring along $2 - this will cover mufti and some special competitions they will be having. There is also a competition going to design a school flag (perhaps they didn't like Mrs Cooper flying the Highlanders flag recently)
Have a good weekend.

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Butterfly Day

Today we had a butterfly hatch just before lunch time. We got to see it but not when it was coming out...it happened too quickly. Over lunch it spread it wings out but it hasn't flown anywhere yet. We don't know if it is a girl or boy yet. We know the boys have dots on the bottom of the wings and the girls don't have any.

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

Tuesday 17

Happy St Patricks day everyone - we are all dressed in green anyway - it is our school uniform colour. Even our caterpillars are green - tucked up in their chyrsalis!
We have got another caterpillar hanging today - perhaps we will get to see it change. We have had a few caterpillars go walking this week. Hazel and Jenna- Rae found them in their tote trays. Mrs Cooper found one on Sunday in the middle of the mat. Perhaps our swan plants are not tasty anymore. Bailey G thinks they are going to look for water or Morgan thinks it might be a pumpkin hunt. Bailey L thinks we might find some chrysalis in some funny places - under seats or even under the desks.
We have compared Bryn's school with Highfield. Our back wall is now covered with our questions and answers. Come along and have a read to find out which school you would like to be at.

Friday, March 13, 2009

Swimming Sports

We really enjoyed the swimming sports yesterday. It was fun to race against each other. Hopefully there will be some photos of us to show you.

Today Mrs Wilson took us again.

The hall is looking really big. Some of us think that it might be a double storey - perhaps even with an escalator - wouldn't that be GREAT.

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Wednesday 11

Today some children got to use the apple laptops and wrote stories about our monarch caterpillars. They were using Kids Pix to do them. Others got to use the email and sent some emails home....did you get one? Perhaps you could send an email to them at school. Our address is room6@highfield.school.nz
Tomorrow is our swimming sports and the Year 4's get to go. They need to remember to bring their togs, 2 towels, morning tea and a drink bottle. They need to be at school before 8.30am to catch the bus. The Year 3's spend the morning in Room 11.
Last night we had some parent, teacher and children conferences. It was great. Tonight we have some more.
Our school photos are on Monday...we better remember to brush our hair on Monday...not like what happens in our BAD HAIR DAY song.
It was great. We had sent Bryn an email asking LOTS of questions about his school. He sent a reply and also sent some great photos. Come in and have a look.

Monday, March 9, 2009

Mad Monday

It hasn't really been that Mad. We have been busy this morning learning how to use Kids Pix on the apple laptops. We had 3 Craighead pupils - Jess, Olivia and Rachelle teaching us. We now can't wait until tomorrow when we can use them again ourselves.
Hi Bryn - we will send you an email because we have some homework for you.
Don't forget the Parent/teacher conferences this week.

Thursday, March 5, 2009

Thursday

We are really enjoying watching our caterpillars....most have now turned into Chrysalis. We wonder how long it will take until we get some butterflies.
In Art we went outside and drew different things from around Highfield School. We just used pencil and black crayon. Next we will use dye to make them colourful.
Although it was a warm day today, we didn't go swimming as the water temperature was TOO cold still.
Kaden and Jenna-Rae played soccer at lunchtime....they had Mr Payne in their team and they WON 8-2. Others spend lunchtime playing in the adventure playground but we are still waiting for the workmen to come back and put the safety matting down in the old playground so we can't use that one yet.
Did you see the photo of the Kea group in the High Country Herald...our stars were Nick and Bailey L right in the front row.

Email News

Today we got an email from Bryn. It was great to hear about what he is doing. We are very jealous that he is swimming lots and seeing lots of cool fish and eels. He starts school at 8 in the morning and finishes at 2pm. He is learning in Cook Island Maori - he will be able to teach us when they get back. HI BRYN - we will email you too.

We have got two caterpillars that are now chrysallises and 4 more hanging. They are great to watch. Maybe tomorrow more will be turned into chrysallis.

Monday Week 5

We got to school today and our swan plants were nearly all eaten. We had 2 caterpillars hanging and one changed into a chrysallis during Maths time - we missed seeing it. Maybe we might get to see the other ones change. Most of the caterpillars are big but we have got 3 very small ones - the eggs must have hatched before the leaves got eaten. Mrs Cooper went home at lunchtime and we have 2 new swan plants to feed the caterpillars.

On Friday we got to wear Mufti - have a look at the photos! At the fun afternoon we got a bit wet but it was fun. Some people liked the lacrosse bean bag throw. Morgan liked the sponge carry one where we had to walk along a beam. We got to use stilts but we had to get some big children to help us. We had to throw balls into an otto bin. Some groups got to fill them all the way up. There are a lot of photos to show - perhaps you need to come to school to see them.

Today we found out who is in our Maths groups. Some children got to change rooms to go to Room 11 or Room 8 for Maths but some of us just stay in Room 6. In Room 6 we learnt some new Maths games.
